MARQUETTE, Mich. — Four student-athletes from Northern Michigan University’s Olympic Training Site qualified to compete in the University World Championships in Pecs, Hungary after placing first at the University Nationals in Akron, Ohio last weekend.

First place finishers, along with their weight class, opponent and match score included: Sammy Jones, 59kg/130lbs, def. Isaiah Varona 2 matches to 0; Kendrick Sanders, 80kg/176lbs, def. Tarrence Williams 2 matches to 0; Orry Elor, 98kg/215.5lbs, def. Nathan Schiedel 2 matches to 0; Toby Erickson, 130kg/286lbs, def. Jake Kettler 2 matches to 0.   

Eighteen NMU-OTS athletes competed in total and the team won four weight classes and had eight in the finals. Coach Hermann said of the event, “This is the most we’ve ever had on a given team from this program. The University Nationals is one of our main tournaments of the year and we take this tournament very seriously.”

Jones, Sanders, Elor and Erickson will travel to Hungary for the University World Championships July 8-12. Preceding this, the University World team camp will be at NMU June 28 to July 3.
