MARQUETTE, Mich.—Members of France’s top Junior Greco-Roman wrestling team are at Northern Michigan University through Monday, Sept. 1, to train with the United States Olympic Education Center team. The visiting team is comprised of athletes up to 20 years of age who train in Burgundy, France. The athletes were selected to travel to Marquette, Mich., based on competition results from last season.
The French team met the USOEC team during a tournament last fall in Austria.
“USOEC Coach Rob Hermann invited our team to train in Marquette,” said two-time Olympian and French team coach Christophe Guenot. “Some of the USOEC athletes are older than our athletes, but the training opportunity is great. The training area and location are very nice.”
Guenot stated he is relatively new to coaching, but he brings his experience as an athlete to the mat. He competed at 74 kilograms during his wrestling career, winning a bronze medal at the 2008 summer Olympic Games in Beijing. Additionally, he finished eighth overall at the 2012 Olympics in London.
