Three Northern Michigan University Olympic Training Site Greco-Roman wrestlers won silver medals today at the Dave Schultz Memorial International held in Colorado Springs, Colo.
In the 59 kg gold-medal final, NMU’s Sam Jones, of Folsom, La., faced Masuto Kawana of Japan. Masuto was up after the first period 4-0 before ultimately earning the gold medal by pin.
Jones faced two teammates on his way to the championship match. He defeated Randon Miranda 8-0 in the quarterfinals and Dalton Roberts 12-1 in the semifinals.
NMU’s Alejandro Sancho, of Miami, also met an athlete from team Japan in the finals, dropping his 66 kg gold-medal match to Tsuchika Shimoyamada 5-6.
On his way to the finals, Sancho earned a victory over Robert Zyko of the U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program 9-0 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, he overtook teammate Travis Rice, 9-1.
In the 75 kg gold-medal bout, NMU’s Jesse Porter met Kamal Bey of the Sunkist Kids. Porter could not hang onto a 3-1 lead, falling 5-3 in the final seconds of the match.
Porter defeated teammate Corey Fitzgerald in the quarterfinals 8-0 and Alec Ortiz of the Minnesota Storm 11-0 in the semifinals to advance to the championship match.
The NMU-OTS squad also won two bronze medals and had a fourth-place finish.
Winning a bronze medal at 71 kg was Anthonie Linares of San Jose, Calif. Linares won his bronze 4-1 over Jefrim Mejia Sambula of Honduras.
Khymba Johnson earned a tech. fall (10-2) victory over Easton Hargrave of Chocker Wrestling Club to secure his bronze medal in the 85 kg weight class.
Placing fourth was Curt Calovecchi of Marquette. Calovecchi faced NMU graduate Dillon Cowan in the bronze-medal match. Cowan, who now wrestles for the U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program, took the medal with an 8-0 win.
