HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University Nordic ski teams raced in the classic events at the NCAA Central Regional from Michigan Tech on Saturday (Feb. 23). The men are five points (66-61) behind Alaska Fairbanks in the standings. The women also trail the Nanooks by a slim three-point (65-62) margin.
Junior Erik Soderman and sophomore Kyle Bratrud finished third and fourth in the men’s 10-kilometer race. Senior Chris Bowler also scored for Northern in seventh place, a tenth of a second behind Lex Treinen of Alaska Fairbanks.
George Cartwright (8th) was also in the top ten. Freshman Sam Elfstrom (28th) and junior Ben Hugus (37th) rounded out the skiers on the men’s side.
Juniors Jordyn Ross and Rosie Frankowski placed third and fourth in the women’s 5-kilometer race. Freshman Mary Kate Cirelli (6th) also scored for the ‘Cats and freshman Hannah Boyer (8th) placed in the top 10.
Freshmen Malin Ericksson (11th) and Megan Edic (20th) rounded out Northern skiers.
NMU wraps up the regional with the mass start freestyle races on Sunday (Feb. 24). The men ski 15K and the women go 10K. The races will not only decide the 2013 regional champions, but, as the final NCAA qualifier, will determine who will represent the Central Region at the NCAA Championships next month.
