MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University indoor track and field team hosted its lone home meet of the season on Saturday (Feb. 16) from the Superior Dome. NMU competed against Michigan Technological University, Lake Superior State University and the University of Wisconsin-Superior. The Wildcats placed in the top three in 11-of-14 events on the afternoon.

“We did a great job competing today, especially going into next the conference championship next week,” stated NMU head coach Cheree Hicks. “We had a lot of girls earn their personal records, or come close, which is right where we want to be at this point in the season.”

Sophomore Brittni Wirtz and junior Sydney Schultz placed in the top two of the 55-meter dash. Senior Colby West finished third in the 200 dash and added a first place finish in the 400 dash with a time of 59.55. Schultz placed third in the 400 for NMU.

“Colby West certainly stuck out today,” added Hicks. “She has earned her personal record twice in the past two weeks in both the 200 and 400.”

Northern swept the top fourth places in the 800 run with sophomore Katie Granquist leading the way, finishing with a time of 2:21.33. Sophomore Caitlin Keskey and freshmen Jaylee Brown and Abby Roche finished behind Granquist, respectively.

NMU also took first through fourth in the 1,600 run and the 3,000 run.  Sophomore Larissa Halonen placed first in the 1,600 with a time of 5:25.52, while senior Brittany Loomis, freshman Catherine Swiderski and junior Evelyn Ruiz rounded out the top four. Sophomore Kelsey Noah finished in seventh.

Junior Mallory Celaya set the pace in the 3,000 with a time of 10:35.15. Junior Chelsea Farquhar, senior Rita Woitas and sophomore Emily Allen took second through fourth place, respectively.

In the 55 dash, senior Brooke Granquist finished with a time of 9.41 second good for third place. The 4x400 relay team of Keskey, Roche, Swiderski and sophomore Katie Granquist placed second. In third place, was the relay team of Brown, Ruiz, Noah and Halonen.

In the field events, senior Delaney Lovett earned the only first place for NMU, with a jump of 10.82 meters in the triple jump. Freshman Melina Mrozek placed second in the pole vault, and Brooke Granquist placed third in the high jump.

In the long jump, senior Mariah Beaman finished in fifth place, while freshman Megan Strait took sixth in the weight throw.

“Our performance today has given us the confidence going to GLIACs knowing we’re right at our peak,” concluded Hicks.

The Wildcats will compete at the 2013 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Championships in Allendale, Mich. next weekend (Feb. 22-23).
