ASHLAND, Ohio – The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team defeated Mercyhurst College on Saturday (Nov. 24) in the Ashland Holiday Inn Classic. The Wildcats defeated the Lakers in a 59-44 decision from the campus of Ashland University.
Northern (3-1) was the first on the board on a layup by sophomore Maria Almquist in the opening seconds of the game. Mercyhurst (0-1) answered back with a layup of its own by Kaylee Foster to tie the game. From there, the ‘Cats went up by two (6-4) and either team didn’t score for nearly three minutes until NMU scored at the 14 minute mark and would dominate the rest of the half. The ‘Cats went up by as much as 19 in the opening half, and led 32-14 at halftime.
The Lakers opened up scoring in the second half, but it wasn’t enough for them to catch the ‘Cats. Mercyhurst would only be able to come within 13 points of NMU for the second half. Almquist and Freshman Nea Makela led NMU with 10 points apiece, while sophomores Lauren Gruber and Brooke Coenen each added eight. Makela also led the board battle with nine rebounds. Gruber and sophomore Sarah Miller had five rebounds.
Foster led Mercyhurst with 13 points on six field goals and one free throw and Dana Banda added seven. Foster also led in rebounds with five, while Abby Allen and Adrienne Kloecker each had four.
The ‘Cats will continue play in the tournament on Sunday (Nov. 25) against Urbana University at 2 p.m.
