MARQUETTE, Mich. – Before hitting the road for the holiday weekend, the Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team hosts non-conference Finlandia University on Tuesday, Nov. 20 at 5:30 p.m. from the Berry Events Center.
The Wildcats (0-1) enter the game after taking ten days off from competition after falling to Davenport on Nov. 10. NMU was defeated 77-67 to the Panthers at the Berry Events Center in the season and home opener. The 'Cats were led by sophomore Lauren Gruber with career-high 26 points on 8-for-10 shooting. Sophomores Alyssa Colla and Brooke Coenen each had a game-high seven rebounds.
Finlandia (0-2) comes into the matchup after starting its season in the Northwestern Tip-Off Tournament in St. Paul, Minn. over the weekend. The Lions fell 83-57 to Northwestern College on Friday (Nov. 16), but were victorious over North Central University by a close 66-64 decision on Saturday (Nov. 17).
The ‘Cats are undefeated (14-0) in the all-time series against the Lions. The last time the two teams faced one another was a season ago when NMU took the 78-54 victory in Marquette. In the game, sophomore forward DeBruin, Coenen and sophomore center Courtney Lemon each had 10 points. Lemon and Gruber led with five rebounds apiece.
NMU plays two games this upcoming weekend at the Ashland Tournament in Ashland, Ohio. Northern will face Mercyhurst at 4 p.m. on Saturday (Nov. 24) and Urbana at 2 p.m. on Sunday (Nov. 25) to close out the non-conference portion of the schedule.
