MARQUETTE – Three U.S. Olympic Education Center weightlifters placed second at the 2012 National Junior Championships Jan. 27-29 in Itasca, Ill.
Northern Michigan University sophomore Shelbie Serpan (Clearwater, Kan.) lifted 210 kilograms in the 75+ kg weight class. Her best snatch was 91 kg and she completed all three clean and jerk lifts, with 119 kg her best lift.
Freshman Ryan Borges (Bradenton, Fla.) placed second in the 62 kg weight class. He lifted a snatch of 94 kg and a clean and jerk of 117 kg, for a total of 211 kg.
The final second-place finish was recorded in the 85 kg weight class. Freshman John McGovern (Pensacola, Fla.) lifted all three snatches, with 115 kg his best. He lifted a clean and jerk of 150 kg, for a total of 265 kg.
Sophomore Jerilyn “Rael” Smith (Indianapolis, Ind.) also competed in the 75+ weight class and placed fourth. She lifted a total of 174 kg, with a 74 kg snatch and a 100 kg clean and jerk.
Freshman Christopher Young (Oakland, Mich.) placed sixth at 77 kg with a total of 227 kg.
Sophomores Kendra Miller (Plainwell, Mich.) and Alex Gordon (Weston, Mass.) placed seventh and eighth, respectively. Miller lifted a total of 127 kg and Gordon lifted a total of 235 kg.
The weightlifters will be competing next at the Thunderdome Challenge at 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3, in the Superior Dome.
