MARQUETTE – Three United States Olympic Education Center weightlifters competed at the 2011 World University Games Aug. 12-23 in Shenzhen, China.

The Games mimicked the Olympics, with more than 7,000 athletes from about 100 countries who competed in 24 sports.  Athletes also had the opportunity to reside in a village mirroring the Olympic Village.

“The games were incredible; it had the efficiency of the Olympics,” said coach Andy Tysz.

Tysz was selected as the head coach for Team USA, which consisted of 11 athletes.

Northern Michigan University seniors Robin Feuerman (Altamonte Springs, Fla.), Allie Henry (River Falls, Wis.) and Steve Jarvis (Niagara, Wis.) were members of Team USA.

Jarvis placed fifth in the 105 kilogram weight class with a 156 kg snatch and a 175 kg clean and jerk. Jarvis also posted a new personal record in the snatch with the 156 kg lift.

Feuerman lifted a total of 167 kg with a snatch of 75 kg and a clean and jerk of 92 kg in the 69 kg weight class.

Henry also lifted at 69 kg, where she lifted a snatch of 86 kg and a clean and jerk of 95 which totaled 181 kg.

“The team as a whole did great,” said Tysz. “Out of the 11 athletes, seven posted new personal records. We didn’t necessarily place, but we competed solidly and the new personal records showed it.”
