MARQUETTE–Dmitry Ryabchinskiy of the United States Olympic Education Center finished first in the 55 kilogram weight class Nov. 7 at the New York Athletic Club Greco-Roman International competition.
Ryabchinskiy (Brooklyn, N.Y.), a freshman at Northern Michigan University, defeated fellow USOEC teammate Paul Tellgren (Anoka, Minn.), NMU senior, in the championship match to claim first place. Ryabchinskiy was victorious in two rounds, 1-0, 3-0.
Pete Gounaridis (Leominster, Mass.) placed second after falling to Robbie Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo.) in the 96 kg championship match 2-0, 1-0.
Capturing fourth place were NMU juniors Bo Beckman (Orem, Utah) and Zac Nielson (Zimmerman, Minn.) at 66kg and 96 kg, respectively.
Ben Sanchez (Leominster, Mass.) and Marco Toledo (Foley, Ala.), both NMU seniors, placed fifth at 66 kg and 74 kg.
“Overall, we wrestled hard and lost some scramble situations that we should have won, but it is a learning process,” said coach Rob Hermann. “The wrestlers know where they are at this point in their training. This tournament will definitely help them see where they need to get to.”
The USOEC Greco-Roman wrestlers break from competition until late January, when they compete in the international Kiki Cup Dual Meet in Colorado Springs, Colo.
