MARQUETTE– The United States Olympic Education Center’s Zac Nielsen was the top American finisher at the Greco-Roman University World Championships in Torino, Italy on Oct. 30.
Nielson (Zimmerman, Minn.), a Northern Michigan University junior, placed fifth at 96 kilograms, losing 0-1, 0-2 to Marcin Olejniczac of Poland in the bronze medal match. His finish helped the United States team to a 12th place finish in the competition.
In his first match, Nielson defeated Croatian Tomislav 1-0, 3-0. He then lost a close 0-1, 0-1 match to Italian Diagoro Timoncini, who later took the silver medal. Nielson bounced back and won against J. Svetislav from Serbia, 2-0, 2-0.
Also representing the USOEC were NMU junior Max Nowry (Wheeling, Ill.), placing ninth at 55 kg and NMU junior Aaron Briggs (Tuscon, Ariz.), who dropped his first-round match at 74 kg.
