MARQUETTE – United States Olympic Education Center weightlifter Collin Ito has been selected for the USA World Team 105+ kilogram division. He will compete in the 2010 Senior World Championships Sept. 17-26 in Antalya, Turkey.

“I was not expecting this,” said Ito about being selected by USA Weightlifting. “I’m excited because it’s the highest level of competition before the Olympics. I want to do well and score points for USA.”

Ito lifted for USA at the Pan American Championships in May and posted a personal-record total of 357 kg to place seventh. According to Coach Andy Tysz, “Collin did so well at Pan Ams and that enabled him to qualify for the World Championships.”

Soon after Ito was selected for the World Team, he was announced as the USOEC’s Athlete of the Year.

“It worked out well that I made the World Team right before the Athlete of the Year was selected,” said Ito. “The timing was just right.”

Ito competed in two international competitions this year. Along with placing seventh at Pan Ams (Guatemala City, Guatemala), Ito placed fourth at the World University Championships (Taichung, Taipei).

Domestically, Ito won silver at the National Collegiate Weightlifting Championships (Marquette, Mich.), and he holds the American Collegiate clean and jerk record of 201 kg.

Ito is in his sixth year at the USOEC and has been named Athlete of the Semester twice. He is a graduate student in the criminal justice department at Northern Michigan University.
