MARQUETTE — A United States Olympic Education Center Greco-Roman wrestler won gold at the Petko Sirakov and Ivan Illiev Junior International Tournament Mar. 21-23 in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Northern Michigan University freshman Ben Provisor (Stevens Point, Wis.) was the top finisher in the 84 kilogram weight-class. He defeated Cyrih Vescau of France, 1-0, 2-0, 1-0. Provisor went 4-0 for the entire tournament, earning him the honor of being named the top international wrestler of the tournament.
Other USOEC wrestlers who competed at the tournament but did not place were freshman Josh Castellano (Wood Dale, Ill.), sophomore Tanner Andrews (North Aurora, Ill.) and sophomore Max Nowry (Wheeling, Ill.).
Nowry had the best showing of any U.S. athlete on Saturday, when he competed at 50 kilograms and finished the tournament with a 1-1 record. Nowry won his first match against Abdellaoui Abdenour of Algeria, 3-0, 6-0. In the second-round, Nowry was eliminated by his loss to Nikolay Vichev of Bulgaria, 0-1, 1-2.
