MARQUETTE – The United States Olympic Education Center’s Greco-Roman wrestling team will send 17 of its athletes to compete in the ASICS University and FILA Cadet National Championships. The event will be held April 23-26 in Akron, Ohio.
University competitors must be under 25 years old and had to have taken classes at a college or university in the last semester.
Greco-Roman assistant coach Jim Gruenwald is hopeful for the event. “We push our guys to win every weight class,” he said. “Ultimately, that’s our goal.”
USOEC men competing, in order of weight class, are: 50 kilograms – Northern Michigan University freshman Max Nowry (Wheeling, Ill.); 55kg –sophomore Paul Tellgren (Anoka, Minn.); 66 kg – sophomore Bo Beckman (Orem, Utah), junior Ben Sanchez (Leominster, Mass.), and facility user Alex Flemming; 74 kg – freshmen Corey Hope (Carol Stream, Ill.) and Ryan Hope (Carol Stream, Ill.), sophomores Jon Drendel (North Aurora, Ill.) and Aaron Briggs (Tuscon, Az.), junior Marco Toledo (Foley, Ala.), senior Andy Bisek (Chaska, Minn.), and graduate student Harry Lester (Akron, Ohio); 84 kg – freshman Chad Hemerson (Monterey, Calif.) and junior Talan Knox (Salt Lake City, Utah); 96 kg – sophomore Zac Nielsen (Zimmerman, Minn.); and 120 kg – David Arendt.
Beckman and Drendel both placed first in their weight classes at last year’s University Nationals.
The USOEC also had two members of the Greco-Roman wrestling team qualify to compete in the Pan American Wrestling Championships in Maracaibo, Venezuela April 23-25. NMU junior Spencer Mango (St. Louis, Mo.) and graduate student Nate Engel (St. Helena, Calif.) will compete on the U.S. Greco-Roman team at 55 kg and 60 kg, respectively. The athletes will wrestle against teams from Central and South America.
