MARQUETTE— United States Olympic Education Center weightlifters Ashley Suggs (Whitesboro, Texas) and Collin Ito (Vista, Calif.) competed at the 2008 Olympic Trials May 16-17 in Atlanta, Ga.
Suggs, who graduated from Northern Michigan University with a bachelor’s degree in sports science this spring, lifted 78 kilograms in the snatch and 85 kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 163 kg. This put Suggs in 29th place overall, up from her initial ranking of 30th.
Ito, an NMU junior, snatched 152 kg and clean and jerked 195 kg for a 347 kg total. Ito finished in 25th place, also up from his original overall ranking of 28th.
“Our athletes did well overall,” said head coach Andy Tysz. “The Olympic Trials are a big deal and there was some great lifting going on. We were pleased to be there and take part in the competition.”
Two former USOEC resident athletes also competed at the event. Emmy Vargas, who now trains at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, finished in 10th place overall with a 235 kg total. Rachel Hearn lifted a total of 205 kg, landing in 21st place.
