MARQUETTE— Three United States Olympic Education Center weightlifters brought home medals from the National Collegiate Championships April 11-13 in Reno, Nev.
Northern Michigan University junior Justin Brimhall (Miami, Fla.) lifted 125 kilograms in the snatch and 150 kg in the clean-and-jerk to finish second in his weight class of 77 kg. “I thought I could have performed a little better, but I’m still happy with the results,” said Brimhall.
Paul Roberts (Bartow, Fla.), a senior at NMU, finished third at 85 kg. Roberts lifted 135 kg in the snatch and 163 kg in the clean-and-jerk, totaling 298 kg.
“Paul and I both felt that he had more left in him, so we’re going to work on making the adjustments that need to be made,” said head coach Andy Tysz.
NMU junior Collin Ito (Vista, Calif.) also took home bronze at 105-plus kg. He lifted 187 kg in the clean-and-jerk and a personal best of 156 kg in the snatch.
Also competing for the USOEC were NMU senior Ashley Suggs (Whitesboro, Texas) at 69 kg and post-baccalaureate student Vance Newgard (Homewood, Ill.) at 105-plus kg. Suggs and Newgard did not place in their weight divisions.
Next up, members of the team will travel to Atlanta, Ga., for the Olympic Team Trials May 16-17.
