Marquette— The United States Olympic Education Center weightlifting team won five medals overall at the National Weightlifting Championships Feb. 29 – March 2 in Columbus, Ohio.
Northern Michigan University junior Justin Brimhall (Miami, Fla.) competed at 77 kilograms and earned a bronze medal with a snatch of 130kg. He also lifted 150kg in the clean-and-jerk. Brimhall finished third overall with a total of 280kg, earning another bronze medal.
NMU senior Paul Roberts (Bartow, Fla.) captured a silver medal in the snatch and bronze medals for the clean-and-jerk and overall total at 85 kg. Roberts lifted 135kg in the snatch and 170kg in the clean-and-jerk for an overall total 305kg.
Other USOEC athletes who competed, along with their respective weight classes and overall finishes, are as follows: NMU freshman Chelsea Kyle (Sandusky, Ohio), at 58kg, finished in fifth place; juniors Alexandria Argueta (Aurora, Ill.), 63kg, seventh place, and Collin Ito (Vista, Calif.), 105-plus kg, fifth; senior Ashley Suggs (Whitesboro, Texas), 69kg, took seventh place after setting a personal record in the clean-and-jerk with a 93 kg lift; and post-baccalaureate student Vance Newgard (Homewood, Ill.), 105-plus kg, 10th.
“I am pleased with everyone because they competed so well with their training and they did a good job at the completion,” said head coach Andy Tysz.
USOEC weightlifters will compete April 11-13 at the National Collegiate Championships in Reno, Nev., to finish the 2007-2008 season.
