Mango grabs gold at 55 kg
MARQUETTE— The United States Olympic Education Center Greco-Roman wrestlers won three gold medals at the New York Athletic Club Holiday International Championships Nov. 16 -18, in West Orange, N.J. Top athletes from around the world traveled to compete in this major, early season international wrestling tournament.                                            
            At 55 kilograms, Northern Michigan University junior Spenser Mango (St. Louis, Mo.) took first place against Virgil Munteanu (Romania) in a 3-3, 7-0 decision. Post-baccalaureate student Nate Engel (St. Helena, Calif.) grabbed fourth in the same weight class, losing the decision to Sam Hazewinkel (5-0, 6-0). Junior Joe Betterman (Chicago, Ill.) won by decision over Marco Lara (4-0, 3-0) and took home the gold and silver, respectively, at 60 kg.     
            At 66 kg, sophomore John Dibala (Silverton, Ore.) finished sixth overall.   
            The USOEC had top finishers at 74kg. Senior Jacob Fisher (Platte City, Mo.) took first over Ionel Puscasu (Romania) (2-1,1-1), junior Cheney Haight (Drem, Utah) won third place by decision (1-4, 3-1, 3-1) over Kenneth Cook, and junior Kevin Lozano (Jefferson, La.) finished in sixth place.
            At 84 kg, facility user Jake Plamann (Freedom, Wis.) lost the decision to T.C. Dantzler (5-1, 3-1) for a sixth-place finish. At 96 kg freshman Peter Gounaridis (Leominster, Mass.) lost the decision to Justin Ruiz (3-0, 8-0) to finish in sixth place.
