MARQUETTE—United States Olympic Education Center weightlifter Paul Roberts (Bartow, Fla.) placed third overall in the 85-kilogram weight class at the National Championships May 11-13 in Schaumburg, Ill.
“This is the first time I’ve gotten a medal at Nationals,” said the Northern Michigan University junior. “It makes me want to work harder to improve consistency for Collegiate Worlds.”
Roberts successfully lifted138 kg in his first snatch attempt. He missed his second lift at 143 kg, but returned to the lifting platform to clear it on his third attempt. Roberts lifted 168 kg his first clean-and-jerk lift. He attempted 173 kg in his second and third lifts, but was unable to complete them successfully. He ended the competition with a 311-kg total.
“I got a little anxious in the snatch, but I came back to get it,” said Roberts. “In the clean-and-jerk, I cleaned it [over my shoulders], but I missed my jerk.”
Three USOEC athletes fell short of the podium, but had solid fourth-place finishes in their respective weight classes. NMU alumna Rachel Hearn (Savannah, Ga.) lifted 90 kg in the snatch and 120 kg in the clean-and-jerk for a total of 210 kg in the 75-plus-kg class. Justin Brimhall (Miami, Fla.) competed at 77 kg. The NMU junior snatched 120 kg and clean-and-jerked 155 kg, totaling 275 kg. NMU sophomore Alex Argueta (Aurora, Ill.) lifted 70 kg in the snatch and 88 kg in the clean-and-jerk for a total of 158 kg in the 63-kg class.
Vance Newgard (Homewood, Ill.) finished eighth at 105-plus kg. He snatched 140 kg and clean-and-jerked 180 kg, totaling 320 kg.
