MARQUETTE—The United States Olympic Education Center’s weightlifting team placed first in the co-ed division at the 2007 National Collegiate Tournament April 14-15 in Reno, Nev.
The USOEC team finished 17 points ahead of Truman State University to secure their spot at the top.
Northern Michigan University junior Paul Roberts (Bartow, Fla.) lifted 314.6 pounds in the snatch and 369.6 lbs. in the clean-and-jerk to finish second in the individual men’s 85-kilogram weight class.
USOEC teammates Steve Jarvis (Niagra, Wis.), a NMU freshman, and sophomore Collin Ito (Vista, Calif.) finished third at 105 kg and 105-plus kg, respectively. Jarvis lifted 297 lbs. in the snatch and 358.6 lbs. in the clean-and-jerk, while Ito raised 325.6 lbs. over his head in the snatch and 413.6 lbs. in the clean-and-jerk.
NMU post-baccalaureate student Vance Newgard (Homewood, Ill.) joined Ito in the 105-plus weight class and finished fifth with his 308-lb. and 396-lb. lifts in the snatch and clean-and-jerk, respectively.
In the women’s division, NMU senior Ashley Suggs (Whitesboro, Texas) and sophomore Alexandria Argueta (Aurora, Ill) finished third and fourth, respectively, in the 69 kg division. Suggs and Argueta both lifted 154 lbs. in the snatch. In the clean-and-jerk, Suggs lifted 191.4 lbs. and Argueta lifted 187 lbs.
Also competing for the USOEC at the National Collegiates were senior Rachel Hearn (Savannah, Ga.) at 75-plus kg and junior Justin Brimhall (Miami, Fla.) at 77 kg. Hearn and Brimhall did not place in their weight divisions.
The weightlifters return to lifting action at the National Championships May 4-6 in Schaumburg, Ill.
