MARQUETTE—Three United States Olympic Education Center weightlifters are set to compete next weekend (Mar. 9-11) at the Junior National Championships in Merrillville, Ind.
In preparing for the competition, Northern Michigan University sophomore Collin Ito (Vista, Calif.), who competes at 105-plus kilograms, has been lifting heavier than usual at practice.
“In both the snatch and clean jerk, I have been lifting about 90 percent plus, trying to get a feel for heavier weights,” said Ito. “This will end soon as I’ll attempt to reach my openers, which are a few kilograms below my maxes.”
Joining Ito at the Junior National Championships will be NMU sophomore Alex Argueta (Aurora, Ill.) at 63 kg and NMU freshman Steve Jarvis (Niagra, Wis.) at 94 kg.
Ito expects the team to do very well at this competition. “Steve is an up-and-coming junior [level competitor] and I think he will surprise some people. Alex is doing well after her surgery and has a chance to medal. I also have a chance to medal, if all goes well.”
“I hope to lift a total of at least 336 pounds, which is what I need to make the Junior World Team,” said Ito.
Ito, Jarvis and Argueta hope to perform well at the competition and use the experience to help prepare them for the University National Championships on April 14-15.
