Student Organization: Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA)

Description The Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) is the world’s most preeminent pre-professional organization for students interested in public relations. Founded in 1968 by its parent society, the Public Relations Society of America, the organization has grown to include more than 9,000 members at more than 245 colleges and universities. The chapter’s goal is to give students experience through activities and workshops. Public relations, entertainment & sports promotion and other majors and minors are welcome to participate in the group. In addition, the chapter sends members to the PRSSA National Conference, which is held each year in various cities throughout the United States. Each year the chapter puts on a campaign to raise money for local non-profit organizations. This includes Jam for Love, a ski and snowboard competition, and Project Compassion, a fundraising fashion show. The members of PRSSA plan the events from the ground up, giving them valuable event planning and coordination experience. In 2011, the organization raised $1,500 for the Lake Superior Village Youth and Family Center. PRSSA also centers itself on volunteering and being a vital part within the community. Involvement has included the U.P. 200/Midnight Run Sled Dog Races, The Doug Garrison Show, President Barack Obama's visit to Marquette, care packages for oversea troops, along with many others. In 2010, the organization was named Teaching Family Homes Community Member of the Year. The chapter also logged 356.5 hours in the Leadership Edge to win the Superior Edge Student Organization Logging Competition in Winter 2011, along with the Volunteer Organization of the Month for February 2011. NMU PRSSA was the winner of the 2010-11 student organization Community Service Award. PRSSA is an amazing opportunity for students of ALL majors. Email mollande@nmu.edu for more information.
