James Howard Carr ’72 BS recently returned to NMU to watch the world premiere of his play, Where a Certain Future. Carr has played many roles in the metro Detroit area, where he resides. Some of his credits include a character in a music video for Insane Clown Posse, a farm owner in the movie Mary’s Buttons and a house boy in the onstage production of The Birdcage.

Dr. Frank Buscher ’82 BA has been named as vice president for academic affairs at Aurora University. Buscher, a trained historian, is also a distinguished teacher, researcher and scholar devoting much of his inquiry to the subject of war crimes, on which he has published extensively.
Richard Tegge ’85 BS, the president of Wealth Strategy Group of Marquette, has been appointed to the board of directors of the Small Business Association of Michigan (SBAM). SBAM is an advocate for more than 25,000 small business owner members in Michigan.
Donna Dahlgren ’87 BS is dean of student success and persistence at Indiana University Southeast. Dahlgren has been gathering data on first-year students and using the research to determine what factors enhance student success. She has had opportunities to share her research internationally.
Kristin Culliton ’87 MPA [B] has been named Chair of the 2016-2017 Foundation of Accounting & Financial Women’s Alliance Board of Directors. She is a member of the Wichita Chapter in Kansas.
Jayme Matchinski ’89 BS has joined the law firm Greensfelder, Hemker & Gale, P.C. as an officer. Matchinski concentrates her practice on health care and corporate law, with a particular focus in the area of sleep medicine. She is a member of the editorial advisory board of Sleep Diagnosis and Therapy Journal, and an advisory member of the board for the Sleep Center Management Institute in Atlanta, Ga.
William Bowerman ’91 MA is the recipient of the Western Michigan University College of Arts and Sciences 2016 Alumni Achievement Award, the honor is presented for remarkable contributions to society. Bowerman has been studying bald eagle ecology and the effects of environmental pollutants in the Great Lakes region since 1984.
John Driscoll ’92 BS has been promoted to senior vice president of recovery services for the Hazeldon Betty Ford Foundation. The foundation has 16 sites across the country.
Justin Bassett ’93 BS is the owner of 45° North Management, a company that specializes in yacht, auto and property management in Harbor Springs, Michigan.
Marleen (Domke) Brown ’94 BS is a special education teacher and a 6th grade language arts teacher at Onaway Area Community Schools.

Damien Barrett ’96 BS is a Mac system technician at Montclair Kimberley Academy. Damien supports and manages a pool of about 1,500 devices in a one-to-one laptop program.
Tamara Bannan ’97 BS is an architect at the University of Michigan AEC-Architecture, which designs and manages renovations and additions to the many historic buildings on its campus. Tamara also hosts events for girls to get them interested in careers as architects and engineers.
Julie Majurin ’97 MS is working as a principal engineer and chemistry manager for Ingersoll Rand. She is leading a team of ten chemists and chemical engineers across the globe to develop sustainability strategies to reduce their environmental impact.
Chad Coolman ’99 BS, ’07 MAE is a teacher at Rogers City Area Schools, teaching 6th through 12th grade physical education and social studies classes. He is also a firefighter and EMT with the Rogers City Volunteer Fire Department.

Kevin Chandler ’00 BS, associate dean of arts and sciences at Macomb Community College, has co-founded a military affairs committee dedicated to protecting and growing the military footprint in Macomb County. As part of the 35-person bipartisan committee, Chandler lobbied to save a fleet of A-10 fighter jets at the Selfridge Air National Guard Base. The lobbying was successful, resulting in the retention of hundreds of jobs.
Russ Phillips ’00 BA recently returned to NMU to participate in the study-abroad fair. A former international studies major at NMU, Phillips now facilitates similar travel opportunities for college students nationwide as a senior manager at the Council on International Education Exchange.
Steve Foley ’00 BS has accepted a staff-writer position at Northern Michigan Review, a daily newspaper publishing company based in Petoskey. He will cover health, food, Charlevoix County, Resort Township and also help with coverage of Charlevoix schools, townships and elections. Foley previously worked for both The North Wind and The Mining Journal.
Kelly (Carson) Bray ’00 BSN is an RN in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Beaumont Royal Oak Hospital and is part of a committee raising funds for a new elementary school playground.
Adam Harkness ’07 BS has joined K2 Sports in Seattle as digital and social media strategist. K2 Sports operates an international portfolio of 14 brands and more than 40 consumer product categories, most known for their long standing ski and snowboard lines.
Luke ’08 BS and Bethany Pearson Whitley ’10 BS, joined by Emily Kralovetz ’12 BS and friend Garret Falls [C], recently set sail from Charlevoix, embarking on their dream adventure of circumnavigating the world. The foursome worked to become debt free, saved money and sold off anything they could not take with them on their boat, the SV Further. Anna (Prahl) Sharkey ’09 BS works as a medical technologist specialist for Michigan Medical Genetics Laboratory in the Pediatric Genetics Division at the University of Michigan Hospital. She is working on finishing a master’s degree through the clinical molecular genetics program at NMU.

Ben Scheelk ’11 BA works as the program manager for the Ocean Foundation. He graduated with a certificate in nonprofit management from The George Washington University in May. He is currently pursuing an MPA.

Coach Gil Krueger
Former Northern Michigan University head coach Gil Krueger, who guided the Wildcats to the 1975 NCAA Division II Football Championship, passed away Oct. 30. He was 87 and a resident of Walnut Creek, Calif. Krueger coached at NMU from 1974-77. His achievements included 1975 NCAA II Coach of the Year, a school-record 10 regular-season wins and an 18-game winning streak that remains the longest in program history. He also coached eight All-Americans.
