Ruben Franco ’70 BA was elected to the position of Justice of the Supreme Court of the State of New York, sitting in Bronx County. Prior to his election, Ruben was a Judge of the Civil Court of the City of New York.  After graduating from NMU, he graduated, cum laude, from Howard University School of Law.  He has served as president and general counsel of the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund, a national civil rights organization, and he was also chairman of the New York City Housing Authority, where he was charged with running the day-to-day operation of the world’s largest stock of public housing, with approximately 600,000 residents, 15,000 employees and an annual operating budget of $1.6 billion.


Therese E. Smith ’82 BSN was recently elected to the Board of Directors for the American Lung Roxanne Daust ’83 VOC, '94 BS has been named to the Upper Peninsula Power Compa-ny’s board of directors. Roxanne is executive vice president of Range Bank, headquartered in Marquette.

Keith Stanton ’83 AS, ’85 BS retired after a 29-year career in safety/loss control management in the insurance industry. Prior to that he was a police officer with the Marquette Police Department and served in the U.S. Air Force. Keith and his wife, Nancy, plan to do a lot of traveling and pursuing hobbies of collecting historical military weapons, woodworking and model trains.

(A) Amy Lou Arnold ’85 BS was inducted into the Brighton Area Women’s Roll of Honor. She has earned a solid reputation as a key costumer supervisor for major movies. Her credits include Titanic, Seabiscuit, Daredevil, Memoirs of a Geisha, Public Enemies and J. Edgar.  Arnold graduated from NMU with a degree in theater and entertainment arts. She began her career at NMU with a work-study position that used her homegrown sewing skills. She has worked at Carelli Costume House in New York City, American Costumes in Hollywood and served as costume supervisor with the Martha Graham Dance Company.

(B) Ron Fonger ’86 BS was named Journalist of the Year by the Detroit chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists for his reporting on the water crisis in his hometown of Flint. Fonger exposed health problems with the water system in the Flint Journal and for before the story gained international traction when elevated lead levels were discovered in children’s blood. (C) Cristin A. Goerlitz ’95 BS is a Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Air Force and took command of her first squadron, the 99th Force Support Squadron at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., in June 2015. Her previous assignment was at the Pentagon. 

Devin Dugan '96 BS, owner and artistic director of ImprovCity, recently starred in the film Too Hip for the Room. It was nominated for Best Feature Film and Best Actor in the Burbank International Film Festival. ImprovCity has been named Best Comedy/Improv Club in Southern California by the Los Angeles Times and The Best Place to Laugh ’Til You Cry by the OC Hot List. He is a recipient of The Standup Comedy Award and is a ten-time published book author including his latest book, Improvisers Drawing Stick Figures.

Pamela Turner ’97 BS is the senior director of digital marketing for The Quell Group, an integrated brand communications firm.

Jim Lorenson ’98 MPA has been appointed to the National Board on Rural Education.

Heidi Dawson ’99 BS, ’07 MAE and John Jessen ’05 BS were selected as NICE Community Schools Teachers of the Year.

Joel Lundberg ’99 BS was honored by the Shikar-Safari Club as Michigan’s Wildlife Officer of the Year. He is a 13-year veteran of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. 


Carolyn Dikos ’01 BA taught English to high school students in Michigan for more than a decade and has successfully transitioned her NMU education and experience to the corporate world. She is now a corporate trainer within Kelly Services and designs and facilitates training for all levels of staff.

Daniel Etelamaki ’01 BS was selected as Marquette Branch Prison Corrections Officer of the Year.

Becky Greiner '07 BS became the company content writer/blogger for Crystal Clear Digital Marketing in Orlando, Fla.

Alicia McCauley ’08 BA is the head of communications at an international advertising agency in New York. She oversees all external and internal communications, social media and public relations for a company of six offices worldwide. 


Erika Morrison ’09 BS, ’13 MAE, a kindergarten teacher at Graveraet Elementary School in Marquette, has been named the 2016 Michigan Reading Association (MRA) K-6 Educator of the Year. MRA is a state-wide literacy group that leads the nation in advocacy, research and best practice.

Stacy B. Milbourn ’11 BS is an associate producer on an indie feature film called Marrying Kinds, a new female-driven film that is reclaiming the often unrealistic romcom genre. Since graduating from NMU with a degree in writing, Milbourn continued her education at the prestigious Florida State University’s College of Motion Picture Arts and later interned for Bryan Singer’s company, Bad Hat Harry Productions. Marrying Kinds follows one romantic but realistic couple as they navigate their way through the horrors of spending one weekend at three wed-dings. A Flying Woman Productions, of North Hollywood, Calif., is crowdfunding to produce the film.

Megan Crowder ’15 B  recently joined Nancy Marshall Communications (NMC) in Augusta, Maine, as an account coordinator responsible for social media campaigns and strategies for NMC’s clients. The company handles public relations and marketing for numerous companies and organizations.


Image DL. Garnet Lewis ’86 MAE wed Vicky Cobb on September 19, 2015. Garn serves on the NMU Board of Trustees and is business manager for Vigano, LLC and Allicom, LLC, based in Saugatuck. 

Hayley Turino ’11 BSN and Luke Chapman ’12 AAS were wed on September 5, 2015 in Marquette. Hayley is an RN at UP Health System-Marquette and Luke is employed by the City of Marquette.

Andrea Tuominen ’10 AAS married Tyler Johnson on September 26, 2015 in Negaunee. Andrea is a radiologic technologist at Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center and Tyler is the art director of Out There Advertising, both in Duluth, Minn.

Kimberly Gischia ’04 BS married Paul Redding on September 19, 2015 in Ishpeming. She is an instructional designer at Herzing University and he is a staff sergeant in the Wisconsin Air National Guard where he is currently working as an industrial hygienist. The couple resides in Wisconsin.

Mallori Tonn ’11 BS and Ryan Korth ex-changed wedding vows on September 19, 2015 in Marquette.  The bride is a case manager for Community Care Inc. in Appleton and the groom is a firefighter and paramedic with the City of Oshkosh. 

Nicole Nason ’02 BS, ’13 MPA married Dr. Jyot Soni on August 30, 2015. Nikki is an executive artistic director. The couple resides in Marquette.

Kimberly DePetro ’03 AB married Dustin Hongisto ’13 BS on June 13, 2015 in Marquette. Kimberly is a benefits assistant in the human resources department at NMU and Dustin is a fifth-grade teacher in Negaunee. 

Janell Wills ’04 BS wed Marcus Hollmann on October 10, 2015 in Greenbush, Wis. The bride is a math teacher for the Kiel Area School District and the groom is an independent dairy nutritionist with Standard Dairy Consultants. They reside in New Holstein, Wis.

Amanda Moraska ’08 BS married  Bradley Benson '10 BS on June 6, 2015 in Marquette. She is a fourth-year anesthesiology resident at the Cleveland Clinic and he is a first-year podiatric surgical resident at St. Vincent Charity Hospital, both in Cleveland, Ohio.

Alan Donaldson ’09 BS and Stephanie Mansfield ’13 BS were wed on October 10, 2015. Alan is a national accounts manager at Teachout Security and Stephanie is a fourth-grade teacher at Stewart Performance Academy. The couple resides in Ferndale.

(D) Angela Neumann ’09 BS married Greg Ingold on November 7, 2015 in Traverse City.

Gayla Rovelsky ’09 BS wed Bradley Vokolek on January 31, 2015 in Ishpeming. Gayla is a speech language pathologist at Desert Springs Hospital in Las Vegas and HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital in Henderson, Nev. Bradley served in the U.S. Army as an intelligence analyst, graduated from Cordon Bleu Culinary Arts Institute of Sacramento, Calif., and is a recent graduate of the personal training program from University of Nevada–Las Vegas.

Ryan Bergman ’06 BS, ’09 CER, ’10 MPA and Kristine Walawender exchanged wedding vows on October 10, 2015 in Virginia Beach, Va. Ryan is the county administrator for Delta County. The couple resides in Escanaba.

Emily Garceau ’10 CER married Isaac Roberts on August 1, 2015 in Negaunee. The bride is employed as an LPN at Stevens Hardie Family Practice in Marquette while the groom is a civil engineer at GEI Consultants in Marquette.

Michelle Parks ’10 BS married Andrew Gaunt on May 24, 2015 in Marquette. Michelle is a K-8 music, band and choir teacher at Bay City Academy and Andrew is a senior accountant/project analyst at Bierlein Companies. The couple resides in Midland.

Emma Christian ’11 CER wed James Flanigan ’12 BS on August 8, 2015 in Ishpeming. Emma is a nurse at UP Health System-Marquette and James is employed by LS&I Railroad. The couple resides in Ishpeming.

Camille Compton ’12 BS married Andrew Sargent on June 27, 2015 in Bountiful, Utah. She is an elementary school Spanish teacher in the Teton County School District and he is a transportation manager for Scenic Safaris and Mad River. They reside in Jackson, Wyoming.

Andrew Koval ’12 BS married Alyssa Rabitaille ’13 AB on June 13, 2015 in Marquette. He is employed by Argonics in Gwinn and she works at Advanced Center for Orthopedics.

Heather Lanala-Tervo ’12 BS and David Pynnonen ’12 BS exchanged wedding vows on October 10, 2015 in Marquette. Heather works at the Marquette County Sheriff ’s Office and David works at the Baraga Maximum Facility. They reside in Champion.

Joshua Peredo ’14 AAS married Monica Arey on August 15, 2015 in Ishpeming. He is a plant electrician at We Energies and she is a certified nurse’s assistant at Marquette County Medical Care Facility.

Katelyn Roth ’14 BS and Andrew Taseris exchanged wedding vows on August 15, 2015 in Marquette. Katelyn is a special education teacher in Negaunee and Andrew is employed by Asplundh Tree Expert Company. The couple resides in Negaunee.

Jessi Gygi ’15 BS married Gunnar Wixtrom on August 1, 2015 in Marquette. Jessi is attending Michigan State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine for her doctorate in veterinary medicine and Gunnar is employed by Demmer Corporation of Lansing. They reside in Haslett.

Jordan Paquet ’15 BS married Kathrine Knarvik on September 18, 2015 in Marquette. Jordan works in Public Relations and Kathrine attends the University of Bergen studying medicine. The couple resides in Bergen, Norway.

Mike Forester '09 BFA and Natalie Naze '09 BSW married on January 8, 2016 in Marquette. Mike currently works as the Art Director for Northern Michigan University and Natalie works at Northcare in Marquette. They reside in Marquette.

Andrew Jones ’03 BS and Nicole Carl ’09 BS exchanged wedding vows on May 14, 2016 in Leland, Michigan. Andy has owned Casualties Skate and Snowboard Shop in Marquette for 16 years and Nicole is employed by State Farm Insurance. The couple resides in Marquette.
