Curling Workshop at NMU

On Sunday, March 16, the Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center will be hosting a curling workshop led by the Delta Rocks Curling Club of Escanaba. The workshop will be held at the Berry Events Center and will begin at 4p.m. Reservations for this workshop are mandatory and as is it is limited 25 people. The fee for the workshop is $10 for adults and $5 for students and kids. To make a reservation, please call 906-227-3212. This event is part of the Beaumier Centerís Cabin Fever Days which features two months of cultural activities in February and March. It is being funded in part by a grant from the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Participants to the workshop are encouraged to wear warm loose fitting clothing and footwear with a good drip (running shoes or boots work well). The equipment (rocks, brooms and sliders) will be provided.
The Delta Rocks Curling Club began in 2002 at the Wells Sports Complex in Escanaba. They are one of two curling clubs in the Upper Peninsula, the other being the Copper country Curling Club of Calumet. Both clubs are members of the United States Curling Association and the Great Lake Curling Association. DRCC curls on 2 sheets (lanes) of ice at the arena and Saturday nights from 8-10p.m. It is an "open curling" concept where people can learn to curl alongside club members. It takes about an hour to learn and then pick games are played.
The DRCC have hosted the U.P. College Curling Classic of r three years now and this year hosted their first college invitational Bonspiel along with Finlandia Curling Club, attracting students from both Michigan and Wisconsin. They have had members attend Bonspiels (tournaments) over the years with the most successful team (Bay College) bringing back the gold medal in their division at the National College Tournament in 2003. This will be the second year Finlandia University will be sending a team to the Nationals.
