Tobacco Cessation Sessions

NMU Students, Faculty and Staff,

In December, the NMU Board of Trustees approved the initiative for Northern Michigan University to become a tobacco-free campus as of Aug. 1, 2014. One of the primary goals of the initiative is to create a healthier campus community. As part of the implementation process, the university is providing a continuum of support that includes awareness, information, access to resources, decision-making support and referrals to a variety of cessation choices.

These services will start next week with a series of tobacco cessation information and awareness sessions provided by the Marquette County Health Department. The sessions are free and open to any current NMU student, faculty and staff member. To reserve a spot at one of the sessions, call the NMU Health Center at 227-2355.

Monday, Feb. 24 -- 1:30-2:30 p.m., Services Building, room 131
Tuesday, Feb. 25 -- 11 a.m. - noon, Back Room, University Center
Wednesday, Feb. 26 -- 5:30-6:30 p.m., 2905 West Science

Participants will be introduced to a variety of quick-start quit tips; provided information about a variety of individual, small group-based and online smoking cessation programs; and introduced to the many options of nicotine replacement therapies. Free Quit Kits will be available to those who wish to get started immediately. They also will be introduced to campus-based resources.

Following these sessions, the staff of the Health Promotion Office (HPO) will be available by appointment to help walk employees and students through the cessation decision-making process so that they can find the best cessation options to match their individual needs. These individual appointments are free and will begin Monday, March 3, continuing throughout the semester. To set up an appointment, contact the Health Promotions Office at hpo@nmu.edu or call 227-1455.

The Health Center staff is also available to consult with employees and students to introduce them to the variety of nicotine replacement therapies. While appointments for Health Center consultations are not required, they are recommended. You can reach the Health Center at 227-2355.
