Interest Meetings: Study Visual Arts in Japan - May 2013

INTEREST MEETINGS: October 19 and October 26, from 2 to 3 pm in Art & Design Building, 164. Join Professor Mits Oba (Art and Design) for this faculty-led study abroad program in Japan. AD495 - a Winter 2013 four-credit course with travel to Japan in May. We will stay at the Japan Center for Michigan Universities in Hikone, Shiga prefecture, where we continue our studies of Japanese visual culture with field trips to Ikaruga, Nara, Kyoto, and Tokyo, as well as to neighboring areas including Higashiomi and Nagahama. We will visit historical sites such as Shinto shrines, Buddhist temples, and feudal castles, as well as museums and commercial districts for contemporary visual culture. At JCMU, we have hands-on experience in Japanese traditional arts such as painting, calligraphy, tea ceremony, and flower arrangement. Students are expected to research on an interaction between the traditional and the modern within a series of specific objects of their choice from Japanese visual culture (the fine arts, architecture, furniture, fashion, movies, toys, comics, commercial design, etc.).
