bookA Sense of Time: The Encyclopedia of Northern Michigan University (1999)

By Russell Magnaghi

In observance of Northern Michigan University’s centennial, the NMU Press published an encyclopedia dedicated solely to NMU’s history. Russell M. Magnaghi, professor of history and university historian, students and interns compiled 100 years of facts that describe who and what Northern was and is today.

The encyclopedia chronicles the Northern community through time,  documenting its rich heritage. It’s a reference of people, places and events significant to NMU’s development during its first century. It provides A-Z information, from academic affairs to Rico Zenti.

The encyclopedia establishes a record of past traditions as an institution—Rush Day, Color Day, Assembly, Ivy Day, the Rose Ceremony, and others—now all memories. For students, faculty, staff and alumni, the encyclopedia is an exciting way to experience the richness of Northern Normal School and its transition to a state university.
