By Olive Anderson
Utopia in Upper Michigan depicts the Hiawatha Village Association, a cooperative village in Schoolcraft County, Michigan. Olive Anderson brings together the personalities, politics and policies of a very brief experiment in Upper Michigan nearly 100 years ago. There are many fascinating angles to the story which warrant reflection despite the brevity of the episode: the contribution of personality, the role of religion and politics, the errors of judgment and the striking contrast of how two women viewed the experience.
