It is not necessary to have an understanding of mathematics and acoustics in order to accomplish tuning. Indeed, very few musicians of the past understood acoustics, and this is one reason why they were hesitant to write down temperament directions.

This book details all the possible testing intervals and comparison intervals for the tuning of each tone.
