The story of a light station—the Au Sable Light—on Lake Superior. The book touches the Lighthouse Service and the Life Saving Service, predecessors of today’s Coast Guard. It sketches the Fresnel lens, an important “lifesaver,” and many other lifesaving devices.

Authors Noble and O’Brien include poetry about wandering sailors, shipwrecks, heroic rescues and death. Photographs of ships, equipment and men in service help relive those bygone days.
