Award winning singer, songwriter, and educator Joanne Shenandoah performed at Kaufman Auditorium on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008, as part of the NMU International Performing Arts Series. Ms. Shenandoah also led a workshop for the Hannahville students that morning where she sang, told stories, and gave them tips on writing and singing.

taster2 The event that kicked off the  November's Native American Heritage Month was the 8th annual First Nations Food Taster.  The event was held on Friday, Nov.7, 2008 at the D.J. Jacobetti Center on NMUs campus and was again a success and as usual had a full menu of foods of Native flavor.

Wade Fernandez performed at NMU on Novemeber 13th in the Great Lakes room. He is a member of the Menominee tribe and  "Male Artist of the Year" 2006 from the NAMMYS (Native American Music Awards) He is down to earth and his music expresses that.

CNAS tote bag

The Center for Native American Studies now has tote bags available for purchase.  The bags are 15" x 19", made of durable polyester, and are forest green and black with white lettering. They are priced at $12 which includes tax and are a great alternative to plastic shopping bags.
17th Annual Pow Wow

The NMU Native American Student powwowAssociation invites you to the 17th annual "Learning to Walk Together"
pow wow.
This year's pow wow will be a one day event on Sat., March 14, 2009, at Vandament Arena on NMUs campus in Marquette, Mich. The big feast will be held at the Jacobetti  Center. The public is welcome to attend. For more information or to volunteer, e-mail us at nasa@nmu.edu or call 906-227-1397.
