Listening Walk Performed On Campus

BioloThe department welcomes Carrie Biolo as percussion instructor for the 2013-2014 school year as sabbatical replacement for James A. Strain. Biolo recently led two Music in Society classes on a Listening Walk based on the theories of composer Pauline Oliveros and acoustic soundscape artist R. Murray Schaefer. The "Extreme Slow Walk" is based on one of Oliveros’ Deep Listening Exercises. Students were instructed to listen intently to the sounds around them while moving as slowly as possible in a particular manner. “The challenge of the exercise is that no matter how slow you are walking, you can always go much slower" Biolo commented “and the slow gait greatly increases the aural experience, making students vividly aware of the sounds around them.” Listening Walk Video
