Founded in 1971, The Marquette Choral Society is a mixed chorus composed of members of the Marquette community and students at Northern Michigan University. Students may elect to receive course credit for participation; the course number is MU112.
Its musical director is Dr. Erin Colwitz, who is the director of choral activities in the NMU Music Department. The group rehearses on Northern’s campus.
Marquette Choral Society performs two major concerts per year, which take place in December and April. Over the years, it has focused much of its attention on the large works of the choral repertoire including the oratorios of Handel, Bach and Haydn and masses by Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert.
Marquette Choral Society takes pride in the fact that it has commissioned and performed world premieres for four important contributions to the choral literature. The commissioned works include compositions by Dave Brubeck, Jackson Berkey (two compositions) and Atso Almila.
First rehearsal for the Winter semester is Monday, January 22nd. See you then!
