NMU ALLIES is an organization at Northern Michigan University for people of all sexual orientations and gender identities. Its purpose is to provide an avenue for faculty, staff, and students who wish to offer visible support for a safe university environment for faculty, staff, and students who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or other gender and sexual minorities (LGBTQ+). Currently there are 289 members.
ALLIES provide support for the diverse needs of the LGBTQ+ people on the campus and in the surrounding community by facilitating processes that assure careful and thorough consideration of recommendations by LGBTQ+ people and the NMU ALLIES. ALLIES are “safe people” on the campus who have an understanding of sexual orientation, and who are comfortable with diversity of sexual orientation.
This is also an organization which seeks to inform others about sexual diversity issues, and to encourage people to join others on the campus and on a national level working to support the LGBTQ+ community nationwide.
