Did you take an exam such as AP, CLEP, or IB?

If so, you may be earning language credits before taking our classes here at NMU. Be sure to submit your official scores to the university for any credits to be applied to your transcript.

Unsure how your test scores coincide with our language courses? Check out the exam equivalencies link below!

Have you earned a Seal of Biliteracy?

At this time, Northern is unable to award academic credit for an earned Seal of Biliteracy. However, if you complete our Seal of Biliteracy form below, we can assist you in determining the best language course placement.

Not sure how much French, German, or Spanish you have retained from high school? Here is a painless way to get a rough placement for a class in any of those languages.

Visit this webpage.

Create an account by inputting your name, e-mail, NMU IN (if you have one, otherwise leave blank), and password (passwords must be at least 8 characters long and not commonly used). Agree to the privacy policy, and then hit the Create Account button.

Once you've created your account, Sign In. Use your e-mail address and password.

Choose the proper test, then follow the directions.

This test takes about 15-30 minutes. After you take the test, the program will give you a recommendation on what class to take (semester 1 = 101, 2 = 102, 3 = 201, 4 = 202).  It automatically sends your score to the department of Languages, Literatures and International Studies. E-mail llis@nmu.edu if you want to confirm that your score is a good indicator of the class you should take.

Note: If you need to take the test more than once, you will need to create a new account using a different e-mail address.

Please note that the department placement policy requires this exam if you took the language in high school.
