    NMU Police Offer 'Winter Driving Experience'

    The NMU Police Department on Wednesday offered its first "Winter Driving Experience" to NMU students in a parking lot with snow-covered ice behind the Superior Dome. Students were able to drive an older, out-of-service patrol vehicle through a cone-filled course. An officer riding shotgun gave tips on how to avoid or effectively confront the most common causes of winter accidents. Another session is scheduled from 3-6 p.m. today (Feb. 22). The hands-on experience complements educational programs that the department presents in the residence halls on winter driving and vehicle maintenance.

    NMU Alumna Writes Two Plays Set in Upper Midwest

    Northern Michigan University alumna Karen Saari’s (‘96 BS) play, "In a Clearing," will have its world premiere this summer under the direction of NMU alumnus Andrew Gall (‘95 BS), interim managing artistic director of Magnetic Theatre Company in Asheville, N.C. Another play by Saari, "Bad in Bed," is set in Marquette and features characters who are NMU alumni. A developmental production of "Bad in Bed" is taking place through Saturday, Feb. 24, at Acadiana Repertory Theatre in Lafayette, La.

    NMU Grad Writes Running Column

    NMU alumna Carly Guggemos was recently a featured columnist for the “Lansing State Journal.” Her column addressed the benefits that running with one’s partner offers, both in supporting a training regimen and strengthening the personal relationship. Guggemos received her master’s degree in exercise science from NMU and is co-owner of Organic Coaching. She is a full-time triathlon and running coach and competitive triathlete.     NMU Prof Co-Authors 'Science' Article

    NMU Biology Assistant Professor Diana Lafferty has been involved in an international research collaboration that set out to discover whether adaptive evolution can rescue animals that change coat colors with the seasons in the face of a changing climate and decreasing snow cover. A related article she co-authored was recently published in “Science” magazine.

    NMU, Innovate Marquette Host 'Relaunch'

    Invent@NMU and Innovate Marquette SmartZone held a “relaunch” open house Friday to celebrate the recent collaboration between the two organizations. Representatives highlighted their expanded entrepreneurial support services and new online client outreach capability to be powered by NMU’s broadband Educational Access Network (EAN). The event featured a screening of the new promotional video, a look at the student-designed logo, a demonstration of the new remote client-access kiosk and client/student success stories.

    Haltof Publishes Book on Holocaust Film

    Northern Michigan University English Professor Marek Haltof recently published a book titled "Screening Auschwitz: Wanda Jakubowska’s 'The Last Stage' and the Politics of Commemoration." The book examines the first narrative film to portray the infamous Nazi German concentration and extermination camp. "The Last Stage" was released in 1948 and directed by Jakubowska, an Auschwitz survivor.

    NMU Group Offers Free Tax Help

    Northern Michigan University’s Beta Alpha Psi will offer free income tax return assistance to students and community members. The program is offered from 5-7 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday through April 12, with the exception of spring break week March 5-9, in the University Center Trading Lab.

    Beaumier Center Screens 'Three Days of the Condor'

    The Beaumier Center at Northern Michigan University will offer a showing of "Three Days of the Condor" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, in the Seminar Room of the Beaumier Center in Gries Hall. The showing is held in conjunction with the Beaumier Center's Cold War in the U.P. exhibition. A discussion with Daniel Truckey will follow the film.

    Northern Michigan University faculty and staff are encouraged to attend a free professional photo shoot on Tuesday, Feb. 27, for updated headshots that will provide a cohesive look for departmental websites and recruiting/marketing materials. University photographer Josh LeClair and his staff will conduct the sessions.

    Self-Injury and Self-Destructive Behaviors Addressed

    A presentation titled “Understanding Self-Injury and Self-Destructive Behaviors in Clinical Populations: Treatment Conceptualization and Considerations” will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23, in room 1322 of Jamrich Hall at Northern Michigan University. This presentation is part of the NMU Psychological Science Colloquium Series.
