The Northern Michigan University Chemistry Club will hold a root beer competition. Students may work individually or in groups to brew root beer from scratch and give a presentation on their products to a judging panel. The registration deadline is Friday, Oct. 17. Students who register will be assigned a presentation time on either Saturday, Nov. 15, or Saturday, Nov. 22. They will have until that day to brew their products, documenting the process and sources they use along the way. It’s anticipated that the judges will represent the chemistry department, college of business, culinary arts department and perhaps a local brewery. Each judge will award a prize and the grand prize is reserved for the highest total score. Judging will be based on the taste, overall presentation and marketability of the product, along with an understanding of the chemistry involved in creating it.
