Finnish musicians Jukka Linkola and Jussi Tapola will lead an interactive discussion titled “Words and Music” from 10:30 to noon Friday, Sept. 19, in Reynolds Recital Hall at Northern Michigan University. The public is invited to attend free of charge. Linkola is a composer and jazz pianist who may be familiar to Marquette-area residents for his string bass concerto commissioned for Finn Grand Fest in 2005. Tapola is the director of the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki. They will discuss the marriage of music and text in opera and musical theater, addressing how composers combine melodies with words and how performers can effectively interpret vocal music. For more information call Rob Engelhart, NMU music professor, at 227-1038.
