Northern Michigan University will host Writing Day on Saturday, May 13, in the Explorer Rooms at the University Center. Approximately 65 middle and high school students, parents and teachers from Marquette County will be in attendance.
From about 12:20-1 p.m., an awards ceremony will be held to announce the winners of NMU’s writing contest for grades 7-12, held earlier this year. Approximately 150 entries were submitted in the areas of short fiction, personal essay and poetry. The submissions were grouped into three age categories: 7th and 8th grade, 9th and 10th grade, and 11th and 12th grade. The first, second and third place winners in each category will read their submissions during the awards ceremony.
There will also be writing workshops for students from 9:15-11:35 a.m. that focus on character development, poetry and sharing. This event is sponsored by the NMU English department and the Graduate Writer’s Association. For more information, contact Susan Morgan at 227-1798.
