GENDER BIAS FILM SHOWINGS AT NMU

MARQUETTE – Two documentaries depicting gender bias will be shown at Northern Michigan University at 7 p.m. Monday, April 17 and Tuesday, April 18, at Whitman Hall room 136.

Slut will be shown on Monday. Directed by Rina Barone and Patricia DiTillio, this 45-minute film shows interviews with women who are dealing with the ramifications of being labeled “sluts.” It also includes feminists, physicians and authors who have researched this term’s evolution from the Victorian era.

Tuesday’s film will be Señorita Extraviada, a 74-minute story of over 300 women from Juarez, Mexico, who have been kidnapped, raped and murdered. The murders first came to light in 1993, and young women continue to disappear there to this day.

These free events are open to the general public and sponsored by VOX and the NMU faculty membership of AAUP. Discussions will be held after each film and moderated by faculty members.
