MARQUETTE – The Kiyoshi Nagata Ensemble, a Japanese drum group, will perform at Northern Michigan University at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 19, at Kaufman Auditorium.
Originally from Toronto, the Kiyoshi Nagata Ensemble is famous for combining thunderous Japanese drum beats with subtle, intricate rhythms using gongs, taiko, bells, wooden clappers, shakers and bamboo flutes.
The group formed in 1998 and has since performed widely in theaters, concert halls, universities and music festivals throughout Canada, the United States and Italy. Its principal aim is to rejuvenate and redefine the ancient art of Japanese folk drumming and move it forward into the 21st century.
