RIP CURRENT PRESENTATION AT NMU

MARQUETTE – Dave Gunther, a meteorologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), will give a presentation titled “Surviving Rip Currents” at Northern Michigan University. It is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, in Jamrich Hall room 105.

According to the NOAA, rip currents pose a serious danger to swimmers in oceans and the Great Lakes. They account for about 80 percent of all lifeguard rescues. The Health Promotion Office and NMU Environmental Science Organization are co-sponsoring the presentation on rip current safety and awareness as part of the “Safer Break” promotion. The goal is to prepare those planning to spend time on the ocean during spring break, or on Lake Superior this summer.
