MARQUETTE – Gideon Yago, a nationally-recognized correspondent for MTV News, will speak at Northern Michigan University. His appearance is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, in the Great Lakes rooms of the University Center.
Born in Madison, Wis., and raised in Queens, N.Y., Yago first appeared on MTV as a winning contestant on Idiot Savant, a pop culture game show, during his freshman year at Columbia University. In 2000, he was one of six college students chosen from around the country to report on the presidential election for Choose or Lose, an MTV program that serves to educate and register young voters. His efforts were so successful that MTV hired him as a full-time news correspondent, even though he had no credentials in either television or journalism.
Yago is the first MTV correspondent to travel to Afghanistan, Kuwait and Iraq, and has hosted specials about drug addiction, bias crime, sex laws, gun violence, and other political hot topics. He has interviewed some of the country’s foremost leaders, including Colin Powell, Rudolph Guiliani, Ralph Nader, John Kerry and President Bush. He currently lives in New York City.
Sponsored by Platform Personalities and the student activity fee, this event is open to the public. There is a $2 general admission fee for everyone except NMU students with ID. For more information, contact Platform Personalities at 227-2447.
