NMU HOSTS WEBCASTS ON EVOLUTIONARY PROCESS

            MARQUETTE – Northern Michigan University will serve as a host site for live Webcasts of the 2005 Holiday Lectures on Science presented by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. The theme is “Evolution: Constant Change and Common Threads.” Two leading biologists will explore how key developmental genes, natural selection, and time fuel the evolutionary process and how the amazing diversity of animals and plants has developed. There is no admission charge.

            The Webcasts are scheduled from 10-11 a.m. Thursday and Friday, Dec. 1-2, in the Mead Auditorium in the West Science Building. On Thursday, Sean Carroll of the University of Wisconsin-Madison will discuss “Endless Forms Most Beautiful.” Friday’s event will feature David Kingsley of the Stanford University School of Medicine presenting “Fossils, Genes and Embryos.”

            Sponsors include the scientific research society Sigma Xi, Tri-Beta Biological Honor Society, and the NMU biology department.
