MARQUETTE – An art exhibit featuring the works of five nationally recognized Finnish-American artists will open Saturday, July 30, at the DeVos Art Museum at Northern Michigan University.
The exhibition, titled "Northern Passages," runs from July 30-Sept. 4. An artists' talk and reception will be held in conjunction with Finn Grand Fest. The talk runs from 7-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12, in the gallery. A reception will follow.
"The idea for this exhibit came about when I talked with Christine Saari, who is in charge of the visual arts programming for Finn Grand Fest, about Northern's museum getting involved in the celebration," said Wayne Francis, DeVos Art Museum director. "This exhibit will be a unique and interesting show. It revolves around five Finnish-American artists, to it ties in nicely with the theme."
The artists featured are Eric Aho, Elsa Bekkala, Marleen Ekola Gerberick, Joyce Koskenmaki and Cherie Sampson. Gerberick will show a large-scale graphite drawing. Aho, Bekkala and Koskenmaki will have paintings on display. Sampson is creating a site-specific installation for the show, using natural materials and electronic imaging.
