MARQUETTE – Northern Michigan University English professor David Boe will present "the Grammar of Grammar" from 3:10-4:15 p.m. Friday, March 25, in Gries Hall room 167.
Boe will examine the historical evolution of the term "grammar" within linguistics and the ways in which philosophers have given "grammar" a rather different sense.
He will also discuss several broad conceptualizations, such as "traditional grammar," which refers to a pre-linguistic approach to the study of language, and "descriptive grammar," which represents a systematic account of the structure of a particular language on its own terms.
The public is invited to attend this free event. The colloquium is part of the 2004-05 Psychology Colloquia Series, sponsored by the NMU department of psychology.
