MARQUETTE – The health promotions office at Northern Michigan University will reveal the second phase of its “2 of 3 Social Norms Marketing Campaign” during the 2005 Wildcat Wellness Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22, in the University Center. The Wellness Fair will be held in conjunction with SaferBreak Week, which will take place from Feb. 20-25.
The “2 out of 3 Campaign” is based on a survey of 300 NMU students about their alcohol consumption. Results showed that two out of three students consume five or fewer standard-measured drinks every time they drink. On Jan. 27, teaser ads reading “2 of 3 consume 5 or less” ran in the North Wind; and table tents and banners were set up around campus.
“Our hope is that with access to good information, our students will understand that not everyone drinks and that those who do don’t drink too much,” said Lenny Shible, NMU health promotion specialist. “In addition, we hope that the data included in this initiative will offer support to students who don’t drink at all or don’t drink to excess.”
This project is sponsored by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and the U.S. Department of Education. For more information, contact Shible at 227-1455.
