NMU VOLUNTEER CENTER ENCOURAGES ORGAN DONATIONS

Â Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚  MARQUETTE – The Northern Michigan University Volunteer Center is participating in the statewide Gift of Life University Challenge through Monday, Feb. 14.

Â Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚  The challenge is an effort to encourage those in the university community to sign up to become organ and tissue donors. According to the NMU Volunteer Center, more than 2,800 Michigan residents are awaiting an organ transplant. Last year, 663 patients in the state received an organ transplant, but 150 people died while waiting, due to the shortage of organ donors.

Â Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚  If NMU gets the most people to sign up (based on the percentage of the student body population that registers), the university will win the University Challenge Traveling Trophy.

 Â Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚  To sign up to become an organ and/or tissue donor, visit http://www.giftoflifemichigan.org/RegistryCard.Asp?school=11 or call the NMU Volunteer Center at 906-227-2466.
