Â Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚  MARQUETTE – The Student Leader Fellowship Program (SLFP) at Northern Michigan University is now accepting applications for the Fall 2005 semester.

 Â Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚  The SLFP is a two-year experience that focuses on leadership skill development and a commitment to community service. Qualifications to enter the program include a minimum grade point average of 2.3 and at least two years of college remaining.

The program includes a two-credit leadership theory and practice course, a year-long mentoring relationship with a local community leader, an annual overnight fall retreat, Skill Builder! workshop and a year-long community service internship. Students who are looking for an experience that will increase their self-confidence in leadership situations and an opportunity to be part of a group of 100 motivated students are encouraged to apply.

 Â Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚  “Some of the benefits of being in the program include increased self-confidence and self-esteem, learning leadership skills, gaining friendships and contacts, and developing a commitment to community service,” SLFP coordinator Rachel Harris said.

 Â Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚  Established in 1991, the SLFP has 490 graduates and has provided 54,880 hours of leadership and service at 215 community service internship sites. To date, 446 citizens in and around Marquette have served as SLFP mentors, many doing so multiple times.
